District of Columbia has the highest average median salary at $89,679 across 464 occupations, based on 2025 BLS OEWS data.
We calculate the average of all median salaries for every occupation with data in each state. This gives a broad overview of the overall wage level. Individual job salaries may vary significantly.
All salary data comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) survey, 2025 estimates. The OEWS covers approximately 1.1 million establishments nationwide.
Most states have data for 600-800+ occupations. The exact count depends on which jobs have sufficient employment in each state for BLS to report. States with larger, more diverse economies tend to have more occupations with data.
Not necessarily. States with higher average salaries (like California and New York) also tend to have higher costs of living. Use our Cost-of-Living Adjusted salary pages for a more accurate comparison of purchasing power.
