Where $100K Goes Furthest: 50 States Ranked (2025)

Last updated: 2025 BLS data · Page refreshed:

A $100,000 salary doesn't go the same distance everywhere. Alaska leaves you with $78,509, while Oregon only $70,044 — a $8,465 gap.

A six-figure salary doesn't go the same distance everywhere. State income taxes alone can swing your take-home pay by more than $8,465 per year on a $100,000 gross — before you even consider cost of living. Here's the 2025 ranking.

The Take-Home Champion

On a $100,000 gross income, Alaska leaves you with the most cash: $78,509 after federal income tax, state income tax, and FICA. That's $8,465 more than Oregon at the bottom of the list ($70,044).

The hidden math: The seven states with no state income tax — Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming — automatically claim the top of the list. Washington also has no state income tax (though it does have a capital gains tax that doesn't affect W-2 wages). New Hampshire taxes investment income but not earned income.

Methodology

We applied 2024 IRS federal income tax brackets (the most recent published as of this article), 2024 state income tax rates, and 2024 FICA rates (Social Security 6.2% up to $168,600 wage base; Medicare 1.45%) to a $100,000 gross income for a single filer with the standard deduction ($14,600 federal). State tax assumes the standard state deduction where applicable. This is intentionally simplified; consult a tax professional for your specific situation. Full methodology.
